So What Else Is New?

And so you woke and wondered and were afraid last night alone pitched into considerations of who and if and if there is a home any are quiet in. “It is sincerely to be hoped that these childish recycles of worry won’t be repeated often.” The windows are tin. There has been no rain in Tokyo for 57 days. The city, you are told, is like a tinder box. You fool romantics dwell on painful, passionate ends.

Praying for Rain

Perhaps the seedlings were better off inside, Really. She's never sure what's best for them, All down the years trying peat pots, blocks, Yanking down flats from storage, penciling markers, Ingratiating herself with baked soils, Now trying perlite, vermiculite, moss, Getting out lamps and heaters, rotating flats, Fighting intruding snails, mice and rats Or even knotweed and bindweed Running their tendrils up through brick. Right now, she wishes she hadn't hurried. All her helpless babies in cracked clay! If it doesn't rain tonight, she tells herself, Never again shall I call April May.

The Death Bed

All the time they were praying He watched the shadow of a tree Flicker on the wall. There is no need of prayer, He said, No need at all. The kin-folk thought it strange That he should ask them from a dying bed. But they left all in a row And it seemed to ease him To see them go. There were some who kept on praying In a room across the hall And some who listened to the breeze That made the shadows waver On the wall.
