If pleasures be mine As aeons and aeons roll by, Why should I repine That under some future sky I may live as butterfly ?

Biography

Sadakichi Hartmann was a German-Japanese American poet, art critic, and performer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Japan to a German father and Japanese mother, he was raised in Germany and later settled in the United States, becoming a notable figure in New York's bohemian circles. His poetry often explores themes of nature, love, and transience, using vivid imagery and musical language. Influenced by Symbolism and early modernism, Hartmann sought to merge Eastern aesthetics with Western poetic forms. He published several collections, including Drifting Flowers of the Sea and My Rubaiyat, which reflect his cross-cultural sensibilities. As an art critic, he wrote extensively on photography and modern art, contributing to early American modernist discourse. Hartmann was known for his flamboyant public persona and performances, earning the nickname 'King of Bohemia' in Greenwich Village. Despite his eccentric reputation, his work significantly influenced avant-garde poetry and criticism in the United States. His legacy lies in bridging diverse artistic traditions and championing experimental expression.
