Biography
An English poet, literary historian, and critic, he served as Professor of Poetry at Oxford before becoming Poet Laureate in 1785. His own verse often draws on medieval and Gothic imagery, exploring solitude, nature, and the sublime. Notable works such as 'The Pleasures of Melancholy' helped define the Graveyard School's preoccupation with mortality and contemplation. As a scholar, his pioneering 'History of English Poetry' provided the first major survey of early English verse, shaping subsequent literary study. His antiquarian interests and revival of older forms influenced the Romantic poets who followed.
