On a sleepless night—'Nuit Blanche' means exactly that—the speaker’s attention narrows to one small sound: the chirping of crickets. It does not form a steady stream; it comes and goes, stopping and starting in the dark. Then the speaker makes a quiet comparison: those irregular chirps feel like the twinkling of stars, which also flicker on and off against the night sky. There is no dramatic event here, just the kind of alert, almost suspended awareness that comes when you cannot sleep and the world feels both very small and very large. The mood is calm, still, and a little lonely, but also gently attentive. Sound and light echo each other across the night, and the speaker simply notices that connection, letting the two rhythms rest side by side.
