Blacklisted — Summary

Why shall I keep the old name? What is a name anywhere anyway? A name is a cheap thing all fathers and mothers leave each child: A job is a job and I want to live, so Why does God Almighty or anybody else care whether I take a new name to go by ?

The speaker sounds like someone who has been blacklisted—shut out of work because of his name or reputation. He insists a name is just a cheap label, something parents hand down, and not worth going hungry over. His tone is tired but defiant: he wants to live, and if taking a new name lets him find a job, he sees no reason why God or anyone else should care. The repeated questions create a mood of exasperation and stubborn practicality. It feels like a man pushed to the edge, arguing with a system that treats his name as more important than his survival.
