The Awakening — Summary

I dreamed that I was a rose That grew beside a lonely way, Close by a path none ever chose, And there I lingered day by day. Beneath the sunshine and the show'r I grew and waited there apart, Gathering perfume hour by hour, And storing it within my heart, Yet, never knew, Just why I waited there and grew. I dreamed that you were a bee That one day gaily flew along, You came across the hedge to me, And sang a soft, love-burdened song. You brushed my petals with a kiss, I woke to gladness with a start, And yielded up to you in bliss The treasured fragrance of my heart; And then I knew That I had waited there for you.

In a dream, the speaker becomes a rose growing beside a lonely path no one travels. Day after day, it gathers fragrance and stores it, not understanding why it is there or what it is waiting for. The tone is quiet and patient, with a touch of longing.

Then the dream shifts: the beloved appears as a bee, flying over the hedge with a gentle, love-filled song. The bee kisses the rose, and the rose wakes into joy, finally giving up the perfume it has been saving. In that moment, the waiting makes sense—it was always for this meeting. The poem creates a tender, romantic mood, using the rose and bee to show how love can feel destined and how loneliness turns to fulfillment when the right person arrives.

Ghosts of the Old Year

The snow has ceased its fluttering flight, The wind sunk to a whisper light, An ominous stillness fills the night, A pause--a hush.
