Rencontre — Summary

My heart that was so passionless Leapt high last night when I saw you! Within me surged the grief of years And whelmed me with its endless rue. My heart that slept so still, so spent, Awoke last night,--to break anew!

The title means “encounter,” and that’s exactly what happens: the speaker unexpectedly sees someone who once mattered deeply. Before this moment, the speaker’s heart felt numb and passionless, almost worn out. But that glimpse of the person jolts it back to life. What returns isn’t simple joy, though. Along with the leap of feeling comes years of stored-up grief and regret, flooding in all at once. The heart the speaker thought was finished with feeling wakes up only to break again.

The mood is intense and bittersweet—there’s a rush of longing, but it’s tangled with sorrow. It’s that painful moment when seeing someone from the past reopens a wound you thought had healed or gone numb.

Oblivion

From the French of Massillon Coicou (Haiti) I hope when I am dead that I shall lie In some deserted grave--I cannot tell you why, But I should like to sleep in some neglected spot

Dead Fires

If this is peace, this dead and leaden thing, Then better far the hateful fret, the sting. Better the wound forever seeking balm Than this gray calm!

Fragment

The breath of life imbued those few dim days! Yet all we had was this,-- A flashing smile, a touch of hands, and once A fleeting kiss.
