A Little Boy's Dream — Summary

To and fro, to and fro In my little boat I go Sailing far across the sea All alone, just little me. And the sea is big and strong And the journey very long. To and fro, to and fro In my little boat I go.

Sea and sky, sea and sky, Quietly on the deck I lie, Having just a little rest. I have really done my best In an awful pirate fight, But we captured them all right. Sea and sky, sea and sky, Quietly on the deck I lie

Far away, far away From my home and from my play, On a journey without end Only with the sea for friend And the fishes in the sea. But they swim away from me Far away, far away From my home and from my play.

Then he cried “O Mother dear.” And he woke and sat upright, They were in the rocking chair, Mother’s arms around him--tight.

In a dream, a little boy sails alone in a small boat across an enormous sea. He pictures himself as a brave sailor, resting after a pirate fight, but the adventure soon turns lonely: he is far from home and play, with only the sea and fish for company, and even the fish swim away. The repeated phrases and rocking rhythm make the poem feel like a lullaby or the sway of a boat.

The final lines pull the dream back to reality. The boy cries out for his mother and wakes to find he was never really alone—he is in a rocking chair with her arms wrapped tightly around him. The mood shifts from exciting but slightly frightening independence to warmth and safety.

Into the world you sent her, mother, Fashioned her body of coral and foam, Combed a wave in her hair’s warm smother, And drove her away from home.
