‘Stop’ Signs — Summary

‘Stop’ signs horrify me. Every time I look at them I start thinking about a great disaster which could happen, if those cold metal signs with just four letters applied to our thoughts, our feelings and our dreams.

All the roads within the world of our souls would be trapped in big traffic jams. Warning sirens, crashes, fires, would appear everywhere in this endless fast-moving network.

The world of our souls would go crazy, and within a few days time a sign with ten letters would appear, ‘Extinction’.

Ndrek Gjini’s speaker admits that ordinary “Stop” signs fill him with dread. They make him picture what would happen if that same command were applied not to cars but to our thoughts, feelings, and dreams. The poem treats the inner life as a huge road network: once signs start blocking it, everything backs up. Sirens, crashes, and fires break out, and the whole system of the soul goes mad. That collapse is not a small, local problem; it spreads until a new ten-letter sign appears: “Extinction.” The speaker’s fear is really about control — what is lost when human beings are told to halt what moves naturally inside them. The mood is urgent and claustrophobic, moving from a simple street object to an apocalyptic inner disaster.
