Alex McLean's short poem is about hiding pain. The speaker says they smile through the day, so to others they probably seem fine. But at certain times, the feeling takes over completely, and the title says it plainly: it's too much.
The images are what make it hit. First the speaker is "floating in space," which suggests being cut off and weightless, with nothing to hold onto. Then comes a cage that is "only big enough for me to stand." That detail is cruel: there's no room to move, sit, or stretch, only to endure. Floating and being trapped seem to contradict each other, and that clash fits the confusion of the feeling. The speaker is both lost and confined, and also raging.
The mood is tense, lonely and raw. The casual, unpolished voice makes it feel like a real confession rather than a performance.
