Nightmare — Summary

Ali_77Anxious

You tell you self you never have to face things alone But here you are standing, staring Eyes glazing over Tears falling from your eyes and face Dirt all on your clothes and face Running from the darkness Each step only takes you farther back Your heart beating faster and faster Walls closing in You scream but no one hears you Chest rising faster and faster Running toward the door You fall and stumble Falling and falling Then it’s over

Ali_77's "Nightmare" drops us into a chase with no explanation. The opening line tells the reader, "you" in the poem, that they never have to face things alone, yet the next line shows exactly that: someone standing and staring, tearful and dirty, with nobody there. That gap between the promise and the reality gives the poem its ache.

The speaker feels pure panic. The repeated "faster and faster" makes the heartbeat and breathing seem to speed up as we read, and the short, clipped lines work like gasps. "Each step only takes you farther back" captures the helplessness of a bad dream, where effort gets you nowhere. The closing walls and the unheard scream add a sense of being trapped and ignored. Then the falling, repeated twice, ends abruptly with "Then it's over." That flat last line could mean waking up, or something more unsettling. The mood is tense and claustrophobic, with only a thin, uncertain relief at the end.

Pain

How do I stop the pain? Do I take a knife and slit my throat Do I cut my self-till the pain dulls away? How about hanging myself on my celling fan
