Three short lines, and a whole moment of disorientation. The speaker looks at wet asphalt, perhaps a road or parking lot after rain, and sees rice stalks waving in it. Of course, the poem doesn't say how this happens. The shiny, dark surface may be reflecting plants growing nearby, or the speaker's mind may be laying one place over another. Judging by the imagery, a rice field and a paved road seem to blur together.

That blur leads straight to the last line, "where am i?" The lowercase letters and missing question mark if anything make it sound quiet and unsure, like a thought slipping out. The speaker feels displaced, maybe a little dreamy, caught between two worlds without knowing which one is real. Is it surprise, or homesickness? The poem leaves that open.

The mood is hushed and strange, but also gentle. Nothing alarming happens. There is just the soft movement of the stalks and the small, honest confusion of someone who has lost their bearings for a moment.
