Three short lines are enough for bubbletaetae_ to say something many love poems need a page for: that love can carry on when there is nothing to see. The poem is called «heartache», yet the word "ache" never appears in the lines. The title does the naming and the lines do the aching, through one quiet comparison.

The first line stops mid-thought: "I love you in the way that". Because of the line break, the reader hangs on the word "that", waiting for the comparison to arrive. A love poem usually promises something grand here, a love as deep as the sea or as old as the hills. What arrives is smaller and stranger: "people still stargaze / on cloudy nights". The speaker compares their love not to an object but to a habit, something ordinary people do without being asked and without any guarantee of reward.

Everything turns on the word "still". It means "even now" and "even so": people keep looking up although the sky has given them nothing. It also carries a hint of stillness, of someone standing quietly with their head tilted back. The speaker doesn't say their love is hopeless, and doesn't say it is rewarded. They only say it persists. The poem never states whether that persistence is admirable or a little foolish, and that ambiguity is part of its ache. "Stargaze" can also mean to daydream, to be impractical and head-in-the-clouds, and the cloudy night sits ironically close to that second meaning.

The shape of the poem supports this. The lines shrink in length, from seven syllables to five to four, so the poem narrows as it goes, like light being covered over. There is no rhyme and no punctuation, not even a full stop at the end, so the sentence trails off the way the looking continues. Still, the poem is full of small sound echoes. "Way" and "stargaze" share a long vowel, so the first line quietly reaches forward to the second. "Still stargaze" repeats its hard *st* sound, a little stumble of stubbornness. "Cloudy nights" ends the poem on a soft, open sound, with nothing to close it off.

The pronouns are worth noticing too. "I" and "you" appear only in the first line, as if the two of them are named once and then swept out of the poem. After that we get "people", a crowd of strangers. This does two things at once. It makes the speaker's private pain feel shared and human, something many people do. It also lets the speaker hide inside that crowd, saying "I hurt" without saying it directly. The beloved is never described, which suits the image: they are the star, present and out of sight.

The poem never says why the stars are hidden, and that gap invites more than one reading. The clouds could stand for distance, for someone who doesn't return the feeling, or for someone who is simply gone. They might even be the speaker's own uncertainty about what the beloved feels. A hopeful reading is just as available: stargazers keep looking because they know the stars are there behind the cloud. Under that reading the love is a kind of faith, and the heartache is the price of believing in something you can't presently see.

What makes the poem memorable is how it turns a familiar tradition upside down. Stars are the usual currency of love poetry, bright, many and admired. Here the stars are missing, and what is praised is the looking. The poem suggests that love is measured less by what looks back at us than by our willingness to keep our eyes on the sky. In three lines and a handful of plain words, it makes that feeling easy to recognise, and hard to forget the next time a night turns cloudy.
