Sick is a short, quiet scene at a hospital bed. Someone seriously ill lies there while family and friends come to visit. The poem seems to be told by an observer, speaking to the patient as "you," which makes the moment feel close and painful. Near the end, the sick person gathers all their strength to say something that matters: "I Will Always Love-". The sentence never finishes. The dash breaks it off, and the next lines tell us why: they are asleep, "forever."
The speaker's feeling seems to be grief, mixed with helplessness. We never find out who or what the patient loved, and that gap is part of the point. The unfinished words leave the loved ones, and the reader, to fill in the ending themselves. The mood is hushed, sad, and sudden. The short, stripped-down lines mimic the way life stops mid-sentence, and the poem ends before anyone can answer.
