Dave Bonta's "Perspective" is only four short lines, but it plays with how we decide what is steady and what is moving. The first couplet asks a question: is it water or ground that was "our sure boat"? Calling either one a boat turns the usual picture upside down. Ground is supposed to be solid, water is supposed to carry us, and here the two blur together. The word "was" suggests that whatever felt secure no longer does.
The second couplet shifts. "The wind in a sail" brings in motion, something pushing us along. Then comes the odd line "one of them is speaking." We never learn who "them" refers to, and that is part of the effect. It could be the wind, the water, the ground, or people on board. The speaker seems unsure, even a little wondering, as if listening for a voice in the landscape. The mood is quiet, open and slightly uncanny, leaving the reader to decide what is steady and who is talking.
