Dave Bonta's short poem plays with the title "Serv/ice," split by a slash so that two words sit inside one: "service," as in a church service, and "ice." The poem then leans on that hidden word. Ice, it says, is "at the core / of an afternoon church," which suggests a chilly, still building, perhaps one where the religious feeling has gone cold or the room itself feels empty and frozen in time.

The second stanza shifts to something small and personal. The speaker drew a sun, a warm, childlike image, but with "as little a prayer as a top." The comparison is odd and open to interpretation. A spinning top turns without going anywhere, so the line may hint at prayer that is mostly motion, or at a faith that is tiny and playful rather than solemn. Judging by the imagery, the speaker seems to be reaching for warmth against the cold. The mood is quiet, slightly puzzled, and gently wistful, like a daydream during a long afternoon.
