Trust fund — Summary

Dave BontaAnxious

meet our money supple where I have been nothing but ice

where my fear is great with child this hard god knows us

waking in a cold bed praying with the clock

as if to pinch a few words together

Dave Bonta's poem sets two things side by side: money and dread. The title, "Trust fund," hints at inherited security, but the speaker's feelings seem far from comfortable. Money is described as "supple," while the speaker has "been nothing but ice," as though wealth bends easily where the speaker feels stiff and frozen. Fear is "great with child," a striking image that suggests anxiety growing and about to be born into something larger.

The "hard god" who "knows us" feels less like a comforting presence and more like a stern judge or an indifferent force. The closing lines shift to a quiet, private scene: someone awake in a cold bed, "praying with the clock," watching time pass. The last image, trying to "pinch a few words together," suggests the effort of finding something to say, whether to God or oneself. The mood is cold, anxious, and fragile, with a small, tired attempt at hope.
