Winter Depression — Summary

The season changes, it turns to December. You know that feeling, the way you felt last time? It's coming back, to haunt you, to cut you deep. That feeling arrives every time, every time the trees loose leaves, every time the blinding colored lights turn on. The feeling that keeps you up, all night. It comes, every time. You hate it, seeing your friends having the time, the time of their lives. That feeling comes in December, maybe even November. But that feeling lasts for a lifetime.

DryBones88's poem is about seasonal sadness, the kind that seems to return on schedule when winter arrives. The speaker talks to "you" directly, as if reminding the reader of something they already know too well: that heavy feeling from last time, ready to "haunt" and "cut deep." It is tied to small signs of the season, like trees losing their leaves and bright lights going up everywhere.

The mood is tired, bleak, and a little trapped. The repetition of "every time" makes the feeling seem like a cycle that can't be escaped, and the line broken into "all / night" slows down to mimic a sleepless stretch. The speaker also feels left out, watching friends enjoy "the time of their lives" while they hurt. The ending is the hardest part. The feeling may arrive in December or November, but it "lasts for a lifetime," which suggests it never fully leaves, even when the season passes.
