Poem #25: Every Day — Summary

Every day is exactly the same, I get up and get dressed, I talk to all the people who secretly hate me, I drone on through school, Then I get home, I sleep till it’s night, Then sleep hours more, I wake up again, And I put on my clothes, I go through the same thing as the day before, It gets a bit old

A student describes a day that feels identical to every other one. The speaker wakes up, dresses, goes to school, comes home, sleeps, and then starts over. The lines are short and flat, and they mostly follow the same plain pattern, which makes the routine feel as repetitive as the speaker says it is.

The one line that stands out is the claim that the people at school "secretly hate" the speaker. It's dropped in casually, but it hints at loneliness or insecurity beneath the boredom. The speaker doesn't dwell on it, which suggests they've gotten used to feeling this way, or are trying not to think about it.

The ending is understated. "It gets a bit old" is a mild way to sum up so much dullness, and the mildness may be a cover for something heavier. The mood is weary, numb, and quietly sad, like someone going through the motions because there's nothing else to do.
