Old Mind

Jeff WolfeContemplative

Dogs run loose

while the fall leaves burn. A man stares from open window.

Timeless time passes. Stick and ball games.

Progress buries yesterday.

The old mind gathers itself for a final time. Rejoin where it left off w/ enough energy to feel every beat and drum. Transport into the field of autumn color. Float overhead to face oncoming beast. Age that shaves away lash of the clock's tick. Rustling wind whittles us into the eye of the dark night. Shoe boxes of artifacts that live on, inside our closets. Afraid to be forgotten. Old letters seal a consciousness from one to another, fog of age smears persona. A vessel of permanence calls from under veil. Body tremors at the thought, that figures nothing out. The hours like sands that slip away. We transfer away to new tissues of flesh. Heard along the horizon. Playful voices in the distance make pure sound, as the orb of fire dips out of sight. What have we done that can be taken across? Belief in an infinite collection the galaxies beyond, give hint. Old mind leans and grasps on, desperate in the massive gap of in between.
