What Could You Want? — Summary

The lonely girl, Who lives for video games and anime, Always sits alone. The popular boy, Lives for sports and girls. Why is the boy, Even trying to talk to the girl? Calling her at around midnight, Texting her silly things, Like "I LOVE SALAD!" Is he mocking her? Making fun at her loneliness? Or is he trying to, Somehow brake her social barrier?

Two teenagers who seem to belong to different worlds sit at the center of this short poem. She is a lonely girl who loves video games and anime and sits by herself. He is a popular boy whose interests are sports and girls. The speaker, who seems to be an outside observer, can't figure out why he keeps reaching out to her.

Most of the poem is questions. He calls around midnight and texts her silly messages like "I LOVE SALAD!", and the speaker wonders whether this is a joke at her expense or a clumsy attempt to get past her "social barrier." The poem never answers, so the doubt stays with us.

The mood is curious, a little anxious, and quietly hopeful. The speaker seems protective of the girl and suspicious of the boy, but the odd, harmless texts hint that he might mean well. Because nothing is resolved, we're left feeling how uncertain it is to trust someone when you're used to being alone.
