The love I lost but never had

I like you, he said, You shouldn't, I answered. We were children no older than ten. His heart I crushed, His feelings I trampled. He confessed to me under the tree, I said. Together I pointed and laughed with the others. My heart broke. I'm sorry, Words I never spoke. Now he sits before me a man. How he's grown, My heart aches... How I yearn for him. I'm sorry...I still can't say it. Looking at him hurts, Thinking of him pains even more. I can never love another. I tried telling him today, His eyes, when he looked at me, I couldn't hold his stare. I wish I could tell him, I do love him, Have loved him, I fear his love may have gone away.
