Lance Harbison's «Serenity» is eleven short lines that read like a message typed quickly and sent before the writer can change their mind. It is about suicide, yet it never describes it. It looks instead at the person on the other side: what they should feel, what they shouldn't, and whether they owe the speaker anything. Its central idea is the gap between how calm a painful decision can sound and how heavy it is underneath.

The title sets up that gap. "Serenity" promises peace, and the poem's tone seems to deliver it. Nothing is shouted, and there are no exclamations or images of violence. But the calm belongs to the speaker's own account of things. The reader is invited to hear what that steadiness leaves out.

The construction supports this. The poem is free verse with no rhyme and no punctuation. The "i" is lowercase, and apostrophes are missing from "Dont," "theres" and "whats." Whether this is deliberate or simply the speed of the writing, it gives the poem the feel of a private note, not a polished performance. The vocabulary is plain and mostly one-syllable, so the rhythm is that of someone talking quietly and evenly.

The language also keeps the act at a distance. "If i were to kill myself" is the only line that names it, and it is conditional, as if hypothetical. After that the poem retreats into "it": "Its just how it ends." The phrase makes something enormous sound like an ordinary fact, and the speaker takes no active part in it.

The next lines are strange and moving: "Dont be sad / theres nothing anyone could do." The person in pain is trying to manage someone else's feelings. The second line is also the poem's most worrying claim, because it shuts the door on help. Yet the poem is addressed to a "you," and speaking to someone at all is a way of reaching toward them. The poem says nobody can help while still talking to someone.

The emotional centre comes with "Because whats a life / If its without you." This is the only moment the language swells, and the word "Because" signals that it is the real reason behind everything else. It is a rhetorical question with no question mark, as though it hardly needs asking. Right after it, the longest line in the poem, "I dont want you to feel obligated to be with me," stretches out like a held breath. "So from now on / Nothing against you" sounds like the polite language of a parting. The poem therefore holds two things at once. The speaker wants to release the other person from any duty, yet has just said that life without them is empty. The reader can sense generosity and heaviness in the same breath.

The ending is the most interesting choice. "Like you said / How i feel is just how i feel" is the only borrowed voice in the poem, the other person's words handed back. The final line is almost a tautology, circling back to itself. It can be read as acceptance, as exhaustion, or as a door quietly closing. Without a full stop, the poem simply stops, which feels truer to the subject than a neat conclusion would.

The poem matters because it shows how plainly a hard subject can be written, and how a quiet voice can carry great weight. It also teaches an important way of reading, which is to notice what a calm surface hides. The poem's claim that "theres nothing anyone could do" is what pain says, not a fact. If a friend writes something like this, or if you ever feel this way yourself, tell a trusted adult or contact a local crisis service. People can do something, and reaching out is how it starts.
