Speckle of dust — Summary

Tree leaves fall and disappear, Meanwhile, I argue with fear -a priceless petal, I'll fade as well, And I feel the end's now very near.

A speckle of dust bathed in sunlight, Barely noticeable even when it's bright And forgotten quickly - that is me, Though the position did never feel right.

An unimportant moment of grace Will end, punching me in the face With the twisted joy of reality. 'You, sweet, won't even leave a trace.'

While I never considered screams The pathway to reach my wildest dreams, It now seem like I've run out of time, I have to step into the blinding beams.

A speckle of dust, forgotten, missed While being hidden in someone's fist, Now it's too late to escape and shine. The only one the sun never kissed.

The speaker feels small, overlooked, and frightened that life is slipping away without leaving a mark. The poem opens with falling leaves, a familiar sign of endings, and the speaker sees their own fate in them: a petal that will fade too. From there, the central image is a speck of dust floating in sunlight, visible only for a moment and quickly forgotten. It is a sharp picture of feeling unimportant.

What stands out is the speaker's mix of fear and regret. They admit they never thought shouting for attention was the way to reach their dreams, but now time seems to be running out, and they feel pushed to step into the spotlight. The ending is bleak, though. The speaker sees themselves as too late, "the only one the sun never kissed." The mood is anxious and wistful, with a sting of self-pity and a quiet ache about being unseen. The steady rhyme gives it a sing-song tone that contrasts with the heavy feelings.

My passive ghosts

I have given my soul to a passive ghost, Now I'm sentenced to stand under a lamppost, Searching for light while hiding it myself, That is what makes my days wistful the most.
