Our story — Poem analysis

lilgirliiRomantic

My heart throbs As I play with your lips beating slowly Breathing fast With a twist of my tongue I give me away Luckily, I get you in return Our fingers entwine and our eyes meet A story is told And only we know How it goes.

"Our story" sounds like an invitation to hear a love story, but the poem gives us no names, no place and no sequence of events. It offers a few seconds of closeness instead: a kiss, a touch, a look. Then it closes the door. Its central idea is that the deepest intimacy can't really be narrated to outsiders. It belongs to the two people living it. The last three lines say so outright: "A story is told / And only we know / How it goes."

The opening sets the body against itself. "My heart throbs" is urgent, almost painful, yet two lines later the heart is "beating slowly" while the breath is "Breathing fast." A slow pulse and quick breathing don't fit together, and that mismatch captures nervous excitement well, when the body can't settle on one speed. The lack of punctuation also lets "beating slowly" float between readings. It could describe the speaker's heart, or the unhurried rhythm of the kiss. The lowercase "b" makes the line feel like a thought slipping in sideways.

The verbs repay attention. "Play" suggests lightness, a game, even an instrument, as if the lips were something to be coaxed into music. "A twist of my tongue" recalls both "slip of the tongue" and "tongue twister", so the line can be read as a physical kiss or as words escaping the speaker's control. The idiom "give myself away", meaning to betray a secret, is trimmed to "give me away", which also sounds like handing oneself over as a gift. Exposure and offering sit in the same phrase. Then comes "Luckily, I get you in return", the only line with a comma before its main clause. That small pause works like an exhale of relief. Love is framed as an exchange, and the understatement of "Luckily" is slightly comic, since the speaker has taken a risk and it has paid off.

The pronouns tell the story the poem won't. The first half is full of separate people: "My heart", "I", "your lips", "me", "you". At "Our fingers entwine" the grammar changes. From there the poem speaks in "our" and "we", so the grammar itself brings the two together. The same line moves from words to touch and sight, since "fingers" and "eyes" do what the tongue did earlier. That sets up a quiet irony. The tongue "gives away" the speaker, but the story that is "told" afterwards is told without any speech at all. The passive "is told" names no teller. It seems to tell itself through hands and eyes.

There is no rhyme and no regular metre, which suits a poem about something too private for pattern. The lines still swell and shrink with purpose. The longest line in the poem is the confession, "With a twist of my tongue I give me away", as though the speaker spills over the usual length. After that the lines shorten and settle. There is some gentle sound-patterning too. "Beating" and "Breathing" are paired in adjacent lines, and the ending leans on one rounded vowel: "told", "only", "know", "goes". Those long "o" sounds make the last lines feel like a door closing softly. The poem's only full stop comes at the very end, after "goes", so the secret is sealed in the last word.

The poem doesn't need to be grand to be effective. It avoids ornate metaphor and trusts plain physical detail: a pulse, a breath, a pair of hands. Its small size mirrors its subject, and the reader ends up on the outside, aware of having glimpsed something they weren't meant to see in full. Most love poems try to tell us everything. This one shows that holding something back can convey intimacy just as strongly, perhaps more.
