Willful Ignorance — Summary

That night was not meant to be special. Yet, it turned out to be, for it was the first time that we had met. Your eyes locked with mine, and I knew right then and there that I was done for. Little did I know that you were an expert at playing with one's heart. You were kind to me when you wanted to be. But when you were silent, I knew that I was the last thing on your mind. Yet, you were always the first person to receive my heart.

Your entire being consumed me. But to you, I was nothing more than a silly girl. I gave my all to you, but you wanted more. Why did I not receive anything in return? Up until that point, you had already tainted my soul. It bled for you, but you ran away from it. You weren't used to somebody caring for you. I loved you, but you weren't ready to love me back. How about we start over? Because I much prefer saying hello, than telling you goodbye. You are my poison, and I have always had a thing for the boys that try to break me.

"Willful Ignorance" by Mercedes1908 is about falling hard for someone who never returns the feeling. The speaker remembers meeting this person on an ordinary night and knowing instantly that she was "done for." Soon the relationship becomes lopsided: he is kind only when it suits him, goes silent when he likes, and treats her as "a silly girl" while she gives him everything.

The title fits the ending. The speaker sees the damage clearly, calling him her "poison" and saying her soul "bled" for him, yet she still asks to start over. Her feelings are a mix of hurt, longing, and stubborn hope. The mood is raw and confessional, with a tired sadness underneath. The last lines are almost a shrug of self-awareness: she knows she is drawn to people who might hurt her, and she seems unable or unwilling to stop.
