This Story is About a Girl
This girl was an orphan The only thing this girl had left of her parents, Was her father's old baseball cap, And her mother's wedding band that she kept on a string Tied to her wrist. This girl had nowhere to go. So she wondered about in all the different towns, Watching all the different people Who never looked at her. But this girl was very special. And although people never seemed to notice her, She noticed them. She saw the goodness that shone out of some like a star But was hidden in others. She saw all the pain that scoured itself along people's shame And the happiness And the depression And the hope, That sparkled in their eyes. And she loved them. And because this girl was so special, She helped them. She did her best to wipe away every tear she saw, Carry those who were tired, Gave what little food she had to those who were hungry. Even those who had done horrible things in life Or who were going to do horrible things, She gave them a smile as they passed, For she could see the scars that hid their kindness. She never received a word of thanks. Even as she aged, Those whose paths she crossed Forgot her, Almost instantaneously. But she didn't mind. As wrinkles marked her face And her lungs got heavy. Her muscles gave out And her bones got weak. She still did her best, To cheer those who were sad Laugh with those who were joyful Carry those who were tired And smile at those who seemed evil. And as she lied down one day To take her last breath To grin her last smile And to shed her last tear, She heard the world whisper in her ear; Thank you.
