Wash away — Poem analysis

Moonochrid69Inspired

When rain is here It washes away My fear

When rain comes by I say goodbye To the storm That is in my brain

The rain Washes away The mistakes I make

The new day A 'new' brain The rain has Cleansed away

We usually think of rain and storms as belonging together, so it is a small surprise that Moonochrid69 pulls them apart. In «Wash away», the rain is a gentle outside cleaner, while the storm is something lodged "in my brain". The poem is about relief from anxious thinking: fear, regret over "the mistakes / I make", and a head too loud to settle. The weather rinses all of it off. Its central idea is that renewal can arrive like a change in the sky. The speaker does not fight the storm or solve it, only notices the rain and says goodbye.

The poem is built from four short stanzas, free in rhythm but threaded with small rhymes. "Here" clicks into "fear" in the first stanza, and "by" into "goodbye" in the second. In the last stanza "day" answers "away". The most interesting sound is the echo of "rain" and "brain". "Brain" ends the second stanza, "The rain" opens the third, and in the final stanza the two sit in alternating lines: "A 'new' brain / The rain has". The two words are one letter apart, so the sound itself suggests that the rain gets inside the head. It is as if the cleansing can be heard.

The line lengths also matter. Most lines are tiny, two or three beats, and the first stanza ends on the two-syllable "My fear". Left alone and light, the fear looks easy to wipe away. By contrast, "That is in my brain" is the longest line in the poem. It lands exactly where the storm is described, so the line itself feels heavier. In the third stanza, the break between "The mistakes" and "I make" gives the mistakes a moment of weight. The echo between "mistakes" and "make" ties the error to the person making it, as if the two words belong together.

Word choice does quiet work too. "Washes away" appears twice, and the final stanza changes it to "Cleansed away". "Washes" is an everyday, almost domestic verb, like dishes or laundry, and it is habitual: it happens whenever rain comes. "Cleansed" is more formal and sounds nearly ritual, and the tense shifts to the completed "has cleansed". The poem moves from a repeated routine to a finished result. Meanwhile "away" or "goodbye" appears in every stanza, so departure is the poem's steady motion.

The ending is where the poem becomes more than a comfort. "The rain has / Cleansed away" stops without saying what has been cleansed. The fear, the storm and the mistakes are never named again, as if the sentence has been emptied along with the speaker's mind. The quotation marks around 'new' are just as revealing. They suggest the speaker half-doubts the claim, perhaps knowing that a brain is not literally replaced overnight, or that the freshness may not last. The opening "When" points the same way. Relief is conditional on the rain returning, and the mistakes are in the present tense, so they will keep happening. The poem reads less like a cure than a ritual that has to be repeated.

That honesty is much of its value. The poem has no elaborate metaphors and no difficult vocabulary. It uses plain words, short lines and one clear image, and that makes it easy to enter. A reader does not need to decode anything to recognise the feeling of a mind that has quieted after being loud. Putting that feeling into weather, something everyone has stood in, gives it a shape that can be shared. The brain is also a deliberate choice of word. It is more physical and less poetic than "heart" or "soul", and it makes the problem sound like something that could actually be rinsed and reset.

The name Moonochrid69 looks like an online handle, and nothing else about the writer is known here, so the poem has to speak for itself. It does so economically, in a few dozen words. Its mix of sound, short lines and a final unfinished sentence suggests how fragile and how welcome a fresh start can be.
