Labels — Summary

NataliaAngry

What are you? If your label shows you to give love, compassion, time, and good memories and you don't, then what are you? Countless times you have broken me down. Lied. And left. And more. Shouldn't you take your label with pride? Put it to good use, show it to Everyone? You seem unable to grasp the consent of such an important label. Too much for you to take on? Is it my fault? I wonder But if this special label has a daughter, and you threw your label away, What does that make me? Nothing?

Natalia's poem is a direct, hurt question aimed at someone who holds a label, and the poem's final lines suggest that label is "parent." The speaker says that anyone with this title should give love, compassion, time and good memories. Instead, the person has broken the speaker down, lied, and left. The short, flat lines "Lied. / And left. / And more." read like a list of injuries the speaker is tired of repeating.

The mood moves from anger to self-doubt. At first the speaker challenges the person to wear the label with pride. Then the questions turn inward: "Is it my fault? / I wonder." The ending is the most painful part. If the person threw their label away, the speaker asks, what does that make the daughter? "Nothing?" The poem suggests that when a parent abandons their role, the child is left wondering about her own worth. The mood is raw, bitter, and sad.
