The Easterly Winds
It was death Who quietly coaxed And convinced you to leave my side. It was he who came On the weird easterly winds When time had wrought such a natural division Between us. It was your unguided decision To go without my knowledge, On your winding way with him and not look back Over these strangely beautiful lands In which our childhood passed. Still I wander Over these irregular and forgotten hills And when that east wind sweeps by, I resist it's tempting tug With all my heart. For I cannot look back at you how I used to. The bulking cliffs Who scourged their way through time And sheltered our careless days Have seen the comings and goings, Every messenger and thief, And I can never hope enough that they will forewarn Of Him when he comes for me.
