paradise — Summary

PhinCheerful

Sand soft as cotton. Waves crashing down. Dried up moss on the shore. The sun baked the earth, Sand remained cool and soft. Floating bodies on the water, Smiling faces plastered on their skin, The sun baked them too, They didn't care. Colorful sails in the distance. The wind warm and crisp. Burbling water against hull. Speedboats roared, skipped on the surface. Leaving white rifts of seafoam, Bubbled up and disappeared. Couples holding hands, Fingers interlocking, Sun-baked skin. Sunglasses stood on their faces, Straw hats shaded their faces. Sprawling tress offered shade, Sitting under, Giving a demure impression, I was in paradise.

Phin's poem is a snapshot of a perfect day at the beach, built almost entirely from what the speaker sees, hears, and feels. There is cool, soft sand, crashing waves, colorful sails, and speedboats that leave trails of seafoam. People float in the water, couples hold hands, and everyone seems happy to be baked by the sun. The speaker stays in the background, watching, until the final line, when the whole scene is named: "I was in paradise."

The mood is relaxed, warm, and carefree. Short, plain lines work like a slow scan of the shore, and the sensory details (cotton-soft sand, burbling water, a warm, crisp wind) make the place easy to picture. Small touches suggest how fleeting the pleasure is, like seafoam that "bubbled up and disappeared." The speaker seems content to sit in the shade and take it all in, and the poem saves its big statement for the very end.
