A bullet is fast, hard and final. The creature in these six lines is a cat who must sniff everything within reach and is terrified when a stranger walks in. That gap between name and nature is the first joke of RunaMarie's poem, and also its quiet centre. The poem never says outright that «Bullet» is the cat's name, but "his sister Sweetie" makes it hard to read the title any other way.

On the surface, the poem is a portrait assembled from small facts. Nobody announces "I love my cat." Instead the speaker lists what the cat is like, and the love shows in how closely he has been watched. The voice is present only in the opening line: "kitty kitty" is what a person says when calling a cat, a bit of coaxing baby-talk dropped into the poem. The central idea is that a personality is made of contradictions. Bullet is sociable and nosy, but he is also frightened, and the poem gives both sides equal weight without apologising for either.

The construction is plain and clever at once. There is no rhyme, no punctuation and no "I". Lines two, three and four begin with bare verbs, "Understands", "Loves", "Licks", and none has a subject. The title supplies it, so every trait hangs from the name like a label on a file. The order matters too. The poem starts with looks ("Beautiful"), moves to the cat's social world (his "fellow cats", his sister), then to his senses, and ends in fear. It is the only line about people, and the only one in which something goes wrong.

The sound and rhythm do careful work in the middle. "Kitty" and "Sweetie" share a soft, diminutive ending, so the cat's affectionate vocabulary rubs off on his sister's name. Then comes "Licks everything", the shortest line, blunt and clipped with its hard k. The word "everything" is then picked up again to open the next line, like a baton passed between runners. You can almost feel a nose moving from object to object. The grammar changes there as well. "Everything must be sniffed" is passive and sounds like a regulation, as though some unwritten law forced the cat to inspect the world. The comedy comes from that officialness. "Understands his fellow cats" works the same way, since "fellow" is a word for colleagues and citizens. It makes the cat a member of a society whose rules we can't see.

Then the last line turns. "Terrified of new people" is longer than anything before it, and "terrified" is the most dramatic word in the poem. It is oddly placed after "Everything must be sniffed". A cat who has to investigate every object meets the one thing he can't comfortably examine on his own terms, an unfamiliar human. The word "new" matters most. The fear is not of people in general. Judging by the voice of "kitty kitty", at least one person is safe, and that person is the one writing the poem. The poem is therefore also a small portrait of trust.

I can't say anything reliable about RunaMarie beyond the name on the poem, so the text has to carry its own weight, and it manages. Its significance lies in how much character it builds from so little. In six short lines we get a cat who is vain, loyal, curious and nervous, and a speaker whose tenderness shows only in the choice of details. The ending also stops the poem from becoming merely cute. A list that opens with "Beautiful" and closes with "Terrified" suggests that loving someone, even a cat, means knowing what scares him. The fierce name on the page is the last joke, because Bullet, as the poem draws him, is the opposite of a bullet: he hesitates, sniffs, and waits to be sure.

Please. Shatter.

Can you feel it? The earth-cracking news. Tumbling to the ground as my legs can no longer support the weight. Feel each and every nail being driven into this heart.

Hurts

This pain. If you can even call it that. Wraps around my brain. Strangling me.
