Sompsin's "Time" describes the feeling of being stuck, as if the clock has stopped while everything else carries on without you. It opens with an hourglass, the usual picture of time slipping by, but then says "motion is stagnant." The sand drifts, yet nothing actually moves forward. Even the trees are frozen, and the laughter is "silenced," which makes the dark around the speaker feel both noisy and empty at once.
The speaker seems lost and quietly desperate. The search for "a door with no lock" and "a lock with no key" sounds like looking for a way out that can't be found, a puzzle with no answer. "A body with no soul" suggests numbness, like going through the motions while feeling hollow. The word "again" near the end hints that this isn't the first time, and the repeated "limbo" closes the poem in a loop. The mood is heavy, eerie and hopeless, with the sense of being trapped in a waiting room that never opens.
