The songs on the radio are ok, but my taste in music is your face

Hardly any poems fit into a single sentence, and this one makes the most of the space. The speaker admits that the songs on the radio are "ok", then swerves: "but my taste in music is your face." Nothing else is said. We get no description of the face, no mention of love, and no word like "beautiful". Yet the feeling comes through clearly. The speaker has found something that makes ordinary pleasures seem faintly dull, and that something is a person.

The poem's engine is the small word "but". Everything before it is deliberately flat. "Ok" is one of the least enthusiastic words in the language, and the radio it describes is a world of ready-made, mass-produced listening. Other people choose the songs, and they play to everyone at once. The comma before "but" is the poem's only punctuation, and it works like the half-second pause before a punchline. After it, the language turns personal. "My" and "your" appear in the same clause, so the radio's crowd is replaced by two people. The shrug becomes a confession.

The central trick is a deliberate category mistake. "Taste in music" normally means a list of favourite genres or bands, but here it is simply "your face". The verb matters too. The speaker doesn't say the face is like music or that it reminds him of a song. He says his taste *is* a face, which turns a comparison into an identity. That makes the praise bolder than any simile could. The word "taste" adds a second layer. It belongs to the mouth and the tongue, and it also means personal judgement, so the speaker is claiming that his most private standard of what is good has been taken over by one person. We might also read the line as a kind of synaesthesia, where a face seen is a tune heard. The poem doesn't say what that tune is like, but judging by the logic of the comparison, the face seems to hold rhythm, mood and the power to make the speaker want to keep looking.

The sound of the sentence supports the idea. The first half ambles along, with "radio" and "ok" spread across roughly ten relaxed syllables, depending on whether you say "ok" or "okay". The second half is a beat shorter and tightens toward its ending, which is a single stressed syllable, "face". There is no end rhyme, and a one-line poem hardly needs one, but the long *a* sound runs quietly through the whole line: "radio", "okay", "taste", "face". By the end the sound has settled into place, so the last word feels inevitable. Even the sound seems to agree that the face is the right answer.

The title joins in too. It reads "Your Face", and those are the poem's last two words, so the poem ends where it began. This is a loop, like a chorus coming round again. It also means the title isn't just a label. It acts as a small answer key, and the sentence below it is the long way round to reach it. The word "your" also tells us the poem is spoken to someone, so we feel like we are overhearing a compliment that was meant for one person.

What makes the poem worth reading is its restraint and its tone. The voice is casual, close to a text message or a remark made in a car, and the compliment is hidden inside a shrug. That is how real affection often sounds when it is trying not to sound too grand. The signature, "syazwan_29", reads like an online username, and the date is given as 27/2/16, but the poem offers nothing more about who wrote it or why, so it's best to read it as it stands. Standing alone, it shows how much a single well-placed metaphor and a single downbeat word can do. "Ok" is the flat note that lets "face" sound like the whole song.
