Constellations — Summary

Tigereye35Romantic

In the sky The little and big Dipper And then you and I

Constellations Far away It's only love That I pay

But you don't know Is what you don't know Is what you'll never ever ever know

That you can't take my heart But you can steal my soul And please don't let go Lying down in the snow

Like ice On a car Can't get in And it won't start

But the constellations Still keep you In my heart

Tigereye35's "Constellations" is about loving someone from a distance. The speaker looks at the night sky, picks out the Big and Little Dipper, and imagines "you and I" as another pair of stars: close in the picture, but far apart in reality. The love is offered freely ("It's only love that I pay"), yet the other person seems unaware of it, and the repeated "ever ever know" makes that ignorance sound both frustrating and sad.

The speaker admits a strange kind of surrender: you can't take my heart, but you can steal my soul. The image of lying in the snow, and of ice on a car that "won't start," suggests feeling frozen and stuck, unable to move forward or let anyone in. Still, the ending softens the chill. The constellations keep the loved one "in my heart," so hope and memory survive. The mood is wistful and quietly aching, cold on the surface but warmed by a stubborn, private devotion.
