You Changed Me — Summary

I once had my head in the clouds So far up I'd feel the sun reach out and warm my face. My eyes would sparkle and glint and play Life was sweet and good and full of grace. And then You changed me. Swallowed me whole like a snake does its prey. I sat, and shook in this new, rank darkness. Pain, what are you doing here? This is not your home. Run along, run away! Put down that fire! My very soul begins to burn. Love, where have you gone? Or are you here already, sitting in this dark garden next to me and is this just you showing that really all you are is just a lie and everything I dreamed about will abandon me and die? Oh, poor, sick, hungry love. Sometimes, I think about building a kite. Something to fly away on. Somewhat impossible. Someday, just maybe. Crack. Another bruise, another bone, another bleed. That'll teach me to look at another man. Why am I so selfish? I am lustful and full of greed. He is the oak tree and I am his weed. He is the king and I am his steed He is the cattle and I am his feed He is the addict and I am his need. He is the god, and I am his seed. I was once a woman. Now, a shadow. You changed me...

The speaker looks back on a time when life felt light and full of grace, with her head in the clouds and the sun on her face. Then someone arrives who "changed" her, and the poem turns dark. The imagery of being swallowed whole, sitting in a "rank darkness," and a fire burning her soul suggests a relationship that has become painful and controlling. The sudden "Crack" and the list of bruises and broken bones point to physical abuse, and the line about looking at another man hints at how she is blamed for it.

The most unsettling moment comes in the run of rhymed lines where she casts herself as the weed, the steed, the feed, the seed. She seems to have absorbed his view of her, calling herself selfish and greedy. The mood is bleak and trapped, with only a faint wish to build a kite and escape "someday, just maybe." The poem ends by naming what she has lost: she was a woman, and now she is a shadow.

Greed

I imagine you as a fat baker, Glistening with sweat and sugar. A hungry glint in your eye, That smug smile, oozy and vulgar.
