Willowsails builds a scene that starts out ordinary and slowly tips into nightmare. Someone is being scolded in a car over a small slip: cookies left in the freezer. But the poem treats it as unforgivable, and the exaggeration is the point. A minor mistake swells until it fills the whole world.
The "you" seems trapped and powerless, listening while the roads spiral and the car and house catch fire. The imagery suggests panic, or a mind coming apart under pressure. The weeping old ladies in the background add a strange, almost dreamlike touch, and the speaker's sharp reply to them ("Go back home and knit sweaters, grannies") shows irritation breaking through.
The ending turns bitter. The speaker wishes the burning on the "you" or on whoever is yelling, it is not entirely clear, hoping ashes will choke them alone. The mood is claustrophobic, angry, and darkly dramatic, with a thread of dark humor running underneath.
