Eros & Philia — Summary

The city lights conspiring to hide the cold shimmer of starlight from our eyes; walks together: a flower & it’s thorns, sharing our thoughts, secrets, fears & feelings,

each the other’s mirror using silk to remove any marks that prevented us from seeing clearly & the resulting electrostatic charge binding us together.

All of this & more is a gift,

& every poem I give you is an attempt to make amends for being no more than an unremarkable, undeserving mammal.

Wordsforghosts writes about a close relationship that blends romantic love and deep friendship, as the title "Eros & Philia" suggests. The first stretch paints the couple walking together under city lights that hide the stars. They share thoughts, secrets and fears, and each acts as the other's mirror. The image of rubbing with silk to clear away marks, then creating a static charge that pulls them together, suggests that the effort of understanding each other is exactly what binds them.

Then the tone shifts. The speaker calls all this a gift, and the poems they write become attempts to "make amends" for being just "an unremarkable, undeserving mammal." The mood is tender but tinged with self-doubt. Love is treated as something wonderful and slightly undeserved, and the speaker's humility is both sweet and a little sad. The scattered line placement on the page even makes that last admission feel small and hesitant.
