The refrain "Angel boy, I've got your back / I found your wings" frames a poem that slowly shows how fragile that promise is. The speaker sits in an idling taxi, surrounded by ordinary things: a fast-food lineup, roadside trees, the sign for Apple Blossom popcorn. Underneath it all runs a "submerged scream" that drowns out the radio jazz. Something is wrong, even though the surface looks normal.
The speaker then calls himself "the new king / with the cardboard crown," which suggests a pretend sort of power, grand but flimsy. When the pair break into the pump room and find the jet pump "grinding itself" into ruin, the machine seems to mirror the speaker's own state. He falls, repeating "down, down, down," and ends up listening to his heart. The mood is anxious and tender at once. The speaker offers comfort to the angel boy, but judging by the imagery, he may be the one who needs holding up.
