Dave Bonta's "Elated" is tiny, but it holds a whole burst of feeling. The first two lines, "news / of peace," are bare and almost like a headline. The poem doesn't say whose peace or which conflict, so the news feels both specific and open, something the speaker has just heard and is still taking in.
Then the voice changes. "O I am sun in sand" is the speaker's reaction, and the "O" sounds like a breath let out. The image is warm and bright: sunlight spread across sand, lighting it up. The last line, "the new cut in a sail," is more surprising. A fresh sail, freshly cut, suggests something unused and ready to catch wind and move. Judging by the imagery, the speaker feels lit up and about to set off, with the relief of peace turning into motion. The mood is light, open and quietly exhilarated, and the short lines leave a lot of white space around that feeling.
