A great evil I saw:
a book comes
to give stairs to people,
but they hold up their heads
to be kissed, not to kiss.
And so bonfires
desire the book
and read it with pleasure
to that long night, the city.
In the glass city there are
no glass windows,
the king is kin to his own nothing
and the queen is a whole table:
so the difference between
gold and evening.
Moonlight over
all the streets
made a great conquest of the city.
Strange to see it go
to the water with
drawn swords.
We met it like dead men,
not a word among us,
not able to stir
in the dirt.
Is the city a thing—
one house, a chest
of drawers—
or a singing master,
singing to the office
and the home?
Pleasure is a red throne
and all the fiddlers in red.
Come to me as if
to the ground,
as if walking up and down
or going to the kitchen.
Eat the first dish
on the king’s table
and give me music of all sorts—
but above all, a kiss.
And we stayed till the city
had a light like a glory
round about it
and a great many men and women
laid hold of us, drinking to us
one after another—
We saw the city
build scaffolds
for all who read books.
Unseasonable light:
war, arson,
a city.
This morning I will go
to Constantinople
where the woman I love
sells child’s coats.
Last night
I sent for my chest
and put on my black silk for joy.
Mr. Hater and I
go forth to the city
and get money by bringing
all business into our hands.
I walk in the park
giving light in my way,
which put me
into despair.
the bottle of night broke
what to do
what answer to give
is loss what the city will be for
in the dark home
the embers discharge their own
great city
her stark anatomy
in the garden
I look at the ground
a city ordered to be kept shut
the body’s a thing
of bad colors
