on a wet cold day in the country
the poor appear far
I distrust nature
but not her miscarriages
living in the world
like a drawing of a tongue at a bonfire
so far from town
singing
till almost 12:00 at night
Old papers trouble me,
like some high country
where all are peaceable
but against us. I draw
things as they are, glad
that my mind is troubled.
Morning came in a white wig,
a country of rain
fallen late and high.
A sitting day
at the sea,
that sudden country.
The business
of sea is absence,
home to prayers.
I went to the well to see
the king touch people
for the king’s evil.
The poor people stand
all morning in the rain,
the wind in the corn
changing all remembrance
into country.
The king, holding us
in his arms, laying
down on a chair,
breaks open
and gives us
his sons and countries,
his family, his ceremonies,
his neck and his left leg
like a ham made to do
in lieu of lobster.
frost white
on the gibbet
the grammar out here in the country
is buttery as lard
in the heart of the country
we expect no ambassador
coming here is coming home to ore
and the ordinary feast
I am put in mind of a marsh with all
the all they name nothing in it
I tell my mind
to my sandwich
how in the country of creeds and good chocolate
the young get vicious
and the king’s ear is with child
as water is with ice
we come to the country
in the country where no poor live
come into the country
and eat all our rent and debts
we have no papers but it being night
whose land is it
slow as an out-of-order god
melancholy as an egg
this fat country
of my foot
