ContemplativeEmily Dickinson

We dream -- it is good we are dreaming --

We dream -- it is good we are dreaming -- It would hurt us -- were we awake -- But since it is playing -- kill us, And we are playing -- shriek -- What harm? Men die -- externally -- It is a truth -- of Blood -- But we -- are dying in Drama -- And Drama -- is never dead -- Cautious -- We jar each other -- And either -- open the eyes -- Lest the Phantasm -- prove the Mistake -- And the livid Surprise Cool us to Shafts of Granite -- With just an Age -- and Name -- And perhaps a phrase in Egyptian -- It's prudenter -- to dream --

As if some little Arctic flower

As if some little Arctic flower Upon the polar hem -- Went wandering down the Latitudes Until it puzzled came To continents of summer -- To firmaments of sun -- To strange, bright crowds of flowers -- And birds, of foreign tongue! I say, As if this little flower To Eden, wandered in -- What then? Why nothing, Only, your inference therefrom!

Which is the best -- the Moon or the Crescent?

Which is the best -- the Moon or the Crescent? Neither -- said the Moon -- That is best which is not -- Achieve it -- You efface the Sheen. Not of detention is Fruition -- Shudder to attain. Transport's decomposition follows -- He is Prism born.

The Moon was but a Chin of Gold

The Moon was but a Chin of Gold A Night or two ago -- And now she turns Her perfect Face Upon the World below -- Her Forehead is of Amplest Blonde -- Her Cheek -- a Beryl hewn -- Her Eye unto the Summer Dew The likest I have known -- Her Lips of Amber never part -- But what must be the smile Upon Her Friend she could confer Were such Her Silver Will -- And what a privilege to be But the remotest Star -- For Certainty She take Her Way Beside Your Palace Door --

Talk not to me of Summer Trees

Talk not to me of Summer Trees The foliage of the mind A Tabernacle is for Birds Of no corporeal kind And winds do go that way at noon To their Ethereal Homes Whose Bugles call the least of us To undepicted Realms

From Cocoon forth a Butterfly

From Cocoon forth a Butterfly As Lady from her Door Emerged -- a Summer Afternoon -- Repairing Everywhere -- Without Design -- that I could trace Except to stray abroad On Miscellaneous Enterprise The Clovers -- understood -- Her pretty Parasol be seen Contracting in a Field Where Men made Hay -- Then struggling hard With an opposing Cloud -- Where Parties -- Phantom as Herself -- To Nowhere -- seemed to go In purposeless Circumference --

I went to Heaven

I went to Heaven -- 'Twas a small Town -- Lit -- with a Ruby -- Lathed -- with Down -- Stiller -- than the fields At the full Dew -- Beautiful -- as Pictures -- No Man drew. People -- like the Moth -- Of Mechlin -- frames -- Duties -- of Gossamer -- And Eider -- names -- Almost -- contented -- I -- could be -- 'Mong such unique Society --

In Winter in my Room

In Winter in my Room I came upon a Worm -- Pink, lank and warm -- But as he was a worm And worms presume Not quite with him at home -- Secured him by a string To something neighboring And went along. A Trifle afterward A thing occurred I'd not believe it if I heard But state with creeping blood -- A snake with mottles rare Surveyed my chamber floor In feature as the worm before

Ah, Moon -- and Star!

Ah, Moon -- and Star! You are very far -- But were no one Farther than you -- Do you think I'd stop For a Firmament -- Or a Cubit -- or so? I could borrow a Bonnet Of the Lark -- And a Chamois' Silver Boot -- And a stirrup of an Antelope -- And be with you -- Tonight! But, Moon, and Star, Though you're very far -- There is one -- farther than you -- He -- is more than a firmament -- from Me --

Great Streets of silence led away

Great Streets of silence led away To Neighborhoods of Pause -- Here was no Notice -- no Dissent No Universe -- no laws -- By Clocks, 'twas Morning, and for Night The Bells at Distance called -- But Epoch had no basis here For Period exhaled.
ContemplativeEmily Dickinson

I lost a World -- the other day!

I lost a World -- the other day! Has Anybody found? You'll know it by the Row of Stars Around its forehead bound. A Rich man -- might not notice it -- Yet -- to my frugal Eye, Of more Esteem than Ducats -- Oh find it -- Sir -- for me!

Teach Him -- When He makes the names

Teach Him -- When He makes the names -- Such an one -- to say -- On his babbling -- Berry -- lips -- As should sound -- to me -- Were my Ear -- as near his nest -- As my thought -- today -- As should sound -- "Forbid us not" -- Some like "Emily."
