alone with horses
you see in what fear
people live
mad at the dead
at Monday
even at my drink
we all burn in tune
instrumental
to every dying bottle
where I have my croft
where I burrow in
doubt flowers in each place I drink
each quiet home with the misfortune
of having me within
about my art
about my purpose
and I rant till past two
New Year’s
drinking interrupted
by rain again
fish gazing at fish
who are absent? who present?
how unhappily a man may fall
into bribing people with drink
to be with him
buoy like a sad king
continuing in the drink
day and night
meaning to lie there
and not being able
a misting morning
my disease come back I drink
to my physician
in the haze of the afternoon
drinking too much
my empty wishing
so old to get so lit
liver like a lie
on behalf of the sun
sometimes pleased sometimes eased
evening comes by accident
let Scotch haunt
and scour our house
I fell and made my disturbance
beat her down in the cellar
Lost the letter I in a card game
& wake up still a little drunk.
The sky looks like the proverbial world
of hurt, scarred by contrails that fade slowly,
much too slowly.
Laundry flaps on the line, & I can make out
every word: Red. Black.
Blue. The dark wash.
But where is everybody?
This old light bulb is fresh out of ideas,
even bad ones.
This body wants to be thumbed through
like someone’s bedtime reading.
The kind with covers of broken-down leather,
dog-eared pages edged
in ineradicable gilt –
a long bag of folly who looks
better than he thinks
a little king of drink
was I
for the fool may be
a cunning scribe
