Wild Heart

Wild heart, wild heart, Where does the wind find home? Wild heart, wild heart, Where does the wild blood rest? Home, home, Rest, rest-- Unto you I come And catch you to my breast. Wild heart, wild heart, There the wind will sleep. Wild heart, wild heart, And the blood gently flow. Come, come, Unresting rest Within my heart's cave deep Where thoughts like bright stars glow.

More than Sweet

The noisy fire, The drumming wind, The creaking trees, And all that hum Of summer air And all the long inquietude Of breaking seas---- Sweet and delightful are In loneliness. But more than these The quiet light From the morn's sun And night's astonished moon, Falling gently upon breaking seas. Such quietness Another beauty is--

Rencontre

My heart that was so passionless Leapt high last night when I saw you! Within me surged the grief of years And whelmed me with its endless rue. My heart that slept so still, so spent, Awoke last night,--to break anew!

The Suicide

For fifty years, Cruel, insatiable Old World, You have punched me over the heart Till you made me cough blood. The few paltry things I gathered You snatched out of my hands. You have knocked the cup from my thirsty lips. You have laughed at my hunger of body and soul. You look at me now and think, "He is still strong, There ought to be twenty more years of good punching there. At the end of that time he will be old and broken, Not able to strike back, But cringing and crying for leave To live a little longer." Those twenty, pitiful, extra years

Masked

She rose to greet her guests with smiling eyes, A wealth of rich experience in her face, Her movements full of that unconscious grace In which a woman's highest power lies; One felt the heart beat true and tenderwise Beneath the velvet folds and filmy lace, Grim sorrow there had seemed to find no place, But only peace and love in loveliest guise. And as with ready wit and kindly mirth She led the throng in repartee and jest, To us she seemed as one from common earth, With all its blighting pain, set far apart And rounded in with peace — who could have guessed A two-edged sword lay buried in her heart !

Blossom-Time

So long as there is April My heart is high, Lifting up its white dreams To the sky. As trees hold up their blossoms In a blowing cloud, My hands are reaching. My hands are proud. All the crumbled splendours Of autumn, and the cries Of winds that I remember Cannot make me wise. Like the trees of April Fearless and fair — My heart swings its censers Through the golden air.

Secret

I shall make a song like your hair ... Gold-woven with shadows green-tinged, And I shall play with my song As my fingers might play with your hair. Deep in my heart I shall play with my song of you, Gently.... I shall laugh At its sensitive lustre ... I shall wrap my song in a blanket, Blue like your eyes are blue With tiny shots of silver. I shall wrap it caressingly, Tenderly.... I shall sing a lullaby To the song I have made

My Little Dreams

I'm folding up my little dreams Within my heart tonight, And praying I may soon forget The torture of their sight. For time's deft fingers scroll my brow With fell relentless art — I'm folding up my little dreams Tonight, within my heart.

Devastation

O love, you have shorn me, and rifled my heart, You have torn down the shrine from the innermost part. And through it now rushes a grief, sadly-wild, That breaks as the plaint of a sorrowing child.

Sympathy

My joy leaps with your ecstasy, In sympathy divine; The smiles that wreathe upon your lips. Find sentinels on mine: Your lightest sigh I'm echoing, I tremble with your pain, And all your tears are falling In my heart like bitter rain.

Bondage

Many cages round me, Bar on bar Stand grim, forbidding! Ghostly pressures Clutch my heart. I gaze with eyes unseeing — Whereunto may I wander free? Alas, alas! My garden walks lie inwardly!

Faith

The faint lose faith When in the tomb their all is laid, And there returns No echoing of weal or woe. The strong hope on, They see the clods close over head, The grass grow green. No word is said. And yet — A little world within the world Are we, Daily our hearts' high yearnings fade, Are buried ! New ones are made, — Are crucified ! And yet —
