Lest this be Heaven indeed

Lest this be Heaven indeed An Obstacle is given That always gauges a Degree Between Ourself and Heaven.

Is Heaven a Physician?

Is Heaven a Physician? They say that He can heal -- But Medicine Posthumous Is unavailable -- Is Heaven an Exchequer? They speak of what we owe -- But that negotiation I'm not a Party to --

"Arcturus" is his other name

"Arcturus" is his other name -- I'd rather call him "Star." It's very mean of Science To go and interfere! I slew a worm the other day -- A "Savant" passing by Murmured "Resurgam" -- "Centipede"! "Oh Lord -- how frail are we"! I pull a flower from the woods -- A monster with a glass Computes the stamens in a breath -- And has her in a "class"! Whereas I took the Butterfly Aforetime in my hat -- He sits erect in "Cabinets" -- The Clover bells forgot.

Sonnet 23 - Is it indeed so? If I lay here dead

Is it indeed so? If I lay here dead, Wouldst thou miss any life in losing mine? And would the sun for thee more coldly shine Because of grave-damps falling round my head? I marvelled, my Beloved, when I read Thy thought so in the letter. I am thine— But . . . so much to thee? Can I pour thy wine While my hands tremble ? Then my soul, instead Of dreams of death, resumes life's lower range. Then, love me, Love! look on me—breathe on me! As brighter ladies do not count it strange, For love, to give up acres and degree, I yield the grave for thy sake, and exchange My near sweet view of Heaven, for earth with thee!

Wolf from the door

We pay the wolf with a fine house in heaven. Save me from nature— not a sister but a servant. All night it drums in our ears.

Retiring

I am too afraid of any vice too late to give her that old gone heaven I dine on a breast of mutton all alone in the dark

when i die

will there be a heaven or hell? will my sight fade, my hearing stop will I leave this Earth for good? notice how all of these are questions, and none of them are answers but I suppose I will find out soon everything I have ever known will be gone I will never see a sunset never run in the dark with friends or will i? how does this all work? how could I be nothing? how could everything keep going? all my life I have only seen the world through my own eyes it feels like my own personal place

How to understand things you have names for? Shot at on the beaches of Rhode Island. Sounds upstairs, Ron's radio, door half open, the woman in a window walking back and forth, noise of the fireplace. Flies in the center of the room, bare trees, houses on which earlier a man in yellow slicker fixed an antenna, strong wind and waves, a single pole in the bay. Traces of heaven, lines of the earth.

On Looking Up by Chance at the Constellations

You’ll wait a long, long time for anything much To happen in heaven beyond the floats of cloud And the Northern Lights that run like tingling nerves. The sun and moon get crossed, but they never touch, Nor strike out fire from each other, nor crash out loud. The planets seem to interfere in their curves, But nothing ever happens, no harm is done. We may as well go patiently on with our life, And look elsewhere than to stars and moon and sun For the shocks and changes we need to keep us sane. It is true the longest drouth will end in rain, The longest peace in China will end in strife. Still it wouldn’t reward the watcher to stay awake In hopes of seeing the calm of heaven break

Child, Child

Child, child, love while you can The voice and the eyes and the soul of a man; Never fear though it break your heart-- Out of the wound new joy will start; Only love proudly and gladly and well, Though love be heaven or love be hell. Child, child, love while you may, For life is short as a happy day; Never fear the thing you feel-- Only by love is life made real; Love, for the deadly sins are seven, Only through love will you enter heaven.
