My books fit my mind,
a music beyond imagination.
But a thief stole a letter—
the last W—
to send to his son.
I write letters to some other sea,
who lay long in bed—
one formerly and now again
to be employed as the sea—
about the admiral, an old hypocrite.
Boy in the bay, stay
and understand:
letters only attend
the coming of a sail.
Midway, we could see
places very pleasant;
the further we went,
the more we lost sight.
At cards, I come to see
my fruitless precaution,
getting without book
when I can get the book.
A letter from the general:
my duty is to kill; my power, to write;
my mission, to proclaim with great praise.
Under the story of the king is the king.
He calls me a very knowing man.
Letters came by ox and dove, good as oysters.
After dinner I wrote a great many letters.
After that, I slept, God forgive me!
After that, I walked, talking.
After that I sat.
In a painted sea, what to write?
A letter taking tomorrow back?
But we sat and drank till drunk
and began to talk foolishly.
How to change?
I drink drink drink, for I find
it puts me out of order
in the name of liberty,
king for a day.
morning, put me in order
like the afternoon
or a letter home
Rot is rot: full satisfaction
or the afternoon lull
at the office.
So write letters
to the dead and the mad.
They live all within
a door or two.
I write my life.
If my letters die before I do,
I may make use
of the lax music
in my bed.
The water came
with letters from the land
to the air
with this fleet of ice.
I live in black,
the color of oil:
oy! I was sick
and oy! I was well,
found but missed
all places here
with letters from home
to home.
I begin to digest my book
for clearer understanding—
a letter for light
a word for spirit
for being other and not
me at all.
