some mouth has run
all night and day
what ills not heard of
which extraordinary news as good
as any peace
up the morning stairs
to war with my wife
the tang of peace
love if convenient
would be high treason
a peace made on disadvantageous terms
with break-up and feud
a room is the last
enemy to all the world
falling from time
into desire
no hand or pinion
full of consequence
should crowd into
such a hole
foolish world
they tell me the wind is dead
my old and most
ingenious acquaintance
the snow talking peace
like the evening light
I found other weather—
poor ship that I have been—
under water.
In search of peace
I stayed there and drank
in the sea.
We rose early for bullets;
one flew off.
The mouth of the gun
should beg to eat
and learn all languages,
not smoke
and be so illiterate
as to welcome absence.
I answer a word as red as war
with play. We can act
like puppets, or be
content to be.
I commission the navy:
get a dolphin drunk
and marry her
in place of war.
Resolve again to see
home and bed.
This morning paper
is raw theater—
love in a maze
of strange straits.
A peace made
upon good terms
is news.
Each of us lives
but is ashamed to be,
resolving to see
pleasure fall.
my eyes must be rose-colored
for thinking you stopped,
thinking it was safe to breathe,
safe to live again.
no matter how long it lasts,
the peace always ends.
I look at the scenery on the bus everyday
It's the same trees
The same grass
The same guardrails and sheep out in the paddock
But today I looked up
For the first time ever I looked up,
and instead of watching the repeated landscape
I saw beautiful clouds
Changing and moving
And I felt peace
Lying on my back on the floor I look up through the tangle of trees to the last slice of the
luminous full moon. All that crowded my mind to the brim this especially busy day
vanished. And then the strange radiating burnished orange ball, so far away and yet so
close in all its strangeness.
lunar eclipse
all of the stars
so much brighter
