a reed in the sand
as lost as us
a mad couple at play
with the sea
this day of the sword
I look after my knives
having not a penny
to pay the sea
like an ungrateful lover
near poverty
who is scornful about
playing a bad hand
the sea was a great horror
though of the same
mind as any
to be altered
it did not know how
to retire and live
a private life
ready for the evening
it matters
that the sea delivered
the best-spoken people
for a song
how great and sudden
is a chance hand
sitting in the sea
a king may lose his office
lose his own head
to the state of play
tired of the war lies
growing every day
I am given to unquiet
like the sea
and wonder at the deadened
glory of a moon
which I shall not think safe
out of my sight
A sea-side rose —
the old interpreter holds it
up to his ear
Caretta caretta
Loggerhead: originally an insult applied to people,
later a kind of cannon shot, the post on a whaleboat
anchoring the harpoon line, a bulbous-headed iron tool
used to heat tar
& the largest sea turtle in the world. Its jaws
can crunch through the thickest armor: queen conch,
giant clam. Like all sea turtles, it can’t retreat
into its shell,
but once grown too big for a grouper’s gullet,
aside from fishing nets & oil spills, it’s nearly
indestructable. When sharks attack, it shows them
the flat side
of its plastron or carapace & their teeth
snap on nothing. It’s built for combat:
even the females spar over feeding grounds,
I have instructions
but nothing without the sea
my full gaze upon
her conversation
instructions as general
as the rain
who shall go into
my book of thorns
which wing is best
to make the first and last
what land drowned at sea
is calling me home
try to see the sea
touching us all
whoever shall come next
must be born
into this work
this way of being full
an out-of-the-way sea
where the port is a ruin
and we are all old
swear at one another
must not be found
and therefore the sea
where we see the dirtiness
of the road
in the wood I decay
in the sea I undress
this is my gun
like a common candle
in pain to defend myself
from the light of day
