on a river in Norway
well lit
the land looking back
a virtuoso at rope
the wind aboard the ships
as we went down to the dock
for strong coffee
We all went into the thorn
together—a great pleasure.
We prepared breakfast
for thirteen guns—a pleasure.
How the ship went through
the dark and rain! A pleasure.
We entered into a dispute:
a guard came
to examine our mirth
with our most abominable lodging.
All day looking
at her body, a good ship;
his, a gilded well.
I found other weather—
poor ship that I have been—
under water.
In search of peace
I stayed there and drank
in the sea.
We walk till weary, all in wool,
to dinner after dinner,
and in the evening go see the ship
sunk in the clear afternoon,
money for money
and self for escaped self.
Disappointed
at home and at the office
I count ships
and at night, fires,
many in which I took
great pleasure.
My clothes and I go forth
to see a play, or call
at places that understand wit
without money.
We are like ships that fetch
the queen of melancholy
for a lost card.
Off the ship that was
at Guinea, walk
to an alehouse, a woman,
cake and the woman
of the house, two
cakes and a pot of ale,
angry at cards.
A long word: wait.
I understand water
but not ships
or the poor body,
having it in mind to sail
my own bed.
The guitar spoke
of love and war, sand and water,
and showed the ships to my wife
in my absence.
The ships were satisfied by wind
and I by a book.
